SELECTING THE CENTRAL PILLAR - Only a few days before the onset of the rainy season, we were crazy enough to cut down a 100-year-old Hinoki (Japanese cypress) tree with a 120% moisture content, already covered with green mold...

INSTALLING THE CENTRAL PILLAR

Wood charcoal powder naturally containing pyrolignous acid was poured around a base rock situated in the center of a 5 x 5 ft. hole.

After putting up the pillar, at the bottom of which a copper pipe for a radiant heating system coiled around, the hole was further filled with oak charcoal. We then placed Yin and Yang Ion Pellets, specially designed for our house (mostly made of agate and tourmaline), at specific angles and heights around the pillar.

FRAMEWORK-RAISING CEREMONY*
* A traditional ceremony for celebrating the installation of the ridge beam of a new house.
The house owner, standing on the ridge, throws rice cake, coins, candies, and other goodies
to neighbors and relatives, then treats the carpenters to sake and sushi.

To be honest, we weren't quite sure why we had to spend so much money and energy just to follow the traditional formality. However, it turned out to be one of the most rewarding experiences as we were able to express our thanks to hard-working, skilled carpenters and do something to bring the community a little closer.
